LEIGH FORBES: Books of all Sorts

A Buzz in the Meadow

by Dave Goulson.

A wonderful book, loosely based around the author’s restoration of his French farmhouse and its surrounding land. Interspaced with his (often humorous) tales of progress are many fascinating sections on subjects relevant to the wider theme: bees, butterflies, death-watch beetles, stick insects, flower fertilisation, pesticides (you have noidea), the mystery beast, and many more.

I loved this book. Goulson’s beautifully accessible prose made for a joyful read, and, as a bonus, I felt like I spent part of my winter strolling through a sunny French meadow. Fabulous.

Recommended for all nature-lovers. Francophiles will enjoy it too.
